چکیده

The archaeological cave « Les Fraux » (Saint-Martin-de-Fressengeas, Dordogne) forms a great network of galleries, characterized by the exceptional richness of its archaeological Bronze Age remains such as domestic fireplaces, ceramic and metal deposits, fingerings incised in the clayey-walls. The cave has been closed according to the collapse of its entrance, at the end of the Bronze Age. The study in progress takes place in a new kind of tool founded by the Institute of Ecology and Environment (INEE): sites dedicated to the study of global ecology. In that framework, we develop new methods of data acquiring based on 3D contact-free measurement techniques, according to an interdisciplinary way. A partnership among archaeologists and surveyors from INSA allow the 3D recording and modeling of the global volume cave. In the same time, we implement the high resolution recording of parietal representations (engravings and fingerings). The aim of this paper is focusing on the complementarity of data which are produced by the different scales of 3D recording used in the cave. Another purpose is to issue a statement of the different 3D technologies tested in “Les Fraux”. Finally, we propose to start a discussion about the way we try to produce an accurate 3D documentation and adapted to the researchers needs.

High Resolution 3d Recording and Modelling of the Bronze Age Cave “les Fraux” in Perigord (france)

The Bronze Age cave “Les Fraux” at Saint-Martin-de-Fressengeas (Dordogne, France) has been discovered in 1989. This site made of a network of galleries of several hundred meters, is a field of investigation for several researchers. This paper will focus on threedimensional contact free measurement techniques for a full 3D-documentation of the structural elements of the cave with some focus on c...

Ungulates and the Middle-to-Upper Paleolithic transition at Grotte XVI (Dordogne, France)

Grotte XVI (Dordogne, France) contains a rich archaeological sequence that begins during the Mousterian and continues through the Magdalenian and includes Châtelperronian and early Aurignacian assemblages. Analyses of the ungulates from this site show no significant change in skeletal part representation, butchering intensity (as measured by cut mark numbers and placement), degree of bone fragm...

Changing Diet Breadth in the Early Upper Palaeolithic of Southwestern France

Archaeological applications of foraging theory models require that variables derived from ecological considerations be translated into archaeological terms. Here, we explore some of the potential difficulties that may exist in the archaeological measurement of diet breadth, a key variable in many foraging theory approaches. We then examine seven ungulate assemblages from the early Upper Palaeol...

Discovery of Unusual Minerals in Paleolithic Black Pigments from Lascaux (France) and Ekain (Spain)

Analyses of archaeological materials aim to rediscover the know-how of Prehistoric people by determining the nature of the painting matter, its preparation mode, and the geographic origin of its raw materials. This study deals with identification of manganese oxides in black pigments by micro-XANES (X-ray absorption near-edge structure) based on previous TEM (transmission electron microscopy) s...

Context and dating of Aurignacian vulvar representations from Abri Castanet, France.

We report here on the 2007 discovery, in perfect archaeological context, of part of the engraved and ocre-stained undersurface of the collapsed rockshelter ceiling from Abri Castanet, Dordogne, France. The decorated surface of the 1.5-t roof-collapse block was in direct contact with the exposed archaeological surface onto which it fell. Because there was no sedimentation between the engraved su...
